Murillo, a well-known Latino playwright based in Chicago, tells his story from the point of view of a young man who gets caught up in a chilling world of chat rooms, come-ons and sexual perverts.<br /><br />The play has been called a "Hitchcock thriller," and perhaps rightfully so. As the young man's life spins further and further out of control, the piece takes on the intensity of a Psycho or a Rear Window. advertisement <br /> <br />Jonathan Beller, an Arizona State University graduate student in theater, is directing dark play for the university's Herberger MainStage Theatre. Performances are Friday through March 2 at ASU Lyceum Theatre in Tempe.<br /><br />"The play is about how we look at ourselves and how we look to others - especially online," Beller says.<br /><br />"It is very hip, very sexy, very timely - especially in the way it explores that threshold of anonymity that the Internet provides. Someone using a fictional sexual identity seduces the teen and then lures him into a face-to-face encounter. That's when worlds collide and all hell breaks loose."<br /><br />It's a scenario that's inevitable given the widespread use of Facebook, My Space, chat rooms and instant messaging, Beller says.<br /><br />"The way we interact with each other has changed dramatically," he says. "Especially young people. They seek intimacy and friendship through the online social environment."<br /><br />In truth, dark play is a scenario that has happened. Murillo based his work on a story that took place in Manchester, England, in 2003, in which a boy was seduced through online conversations.<br /><br />"Truth is stranger than general fiction here," Beller says. <br /><br />It isn't necessarily a case of naivete, he adds.<br /><br />"The whole Internet thing is such a new phenomenon. We are all somewhat gullible, especially when we don't know who's on the other end. We're having to learn the hard way how to deal with it."<br /><br />Because much of the play deals with the text of the chat-room conversations, it has been a challenge to stage.<br /><br />"Most of it takes place in cyberspace, and we had to find a way to create that illusion without having the actors do nothing but sit in front of a keyboard," Beller says. <br /><br />"I think we've succeeded in a way that will make the play accessible to audiences. The play is written for young people, and I think they'll get it.
